Synopsis
When Ellie Fields accepts a teaching job in a tiny Louisiana town deep in bayou country in 1949, she knows her life will change–but she could never imagine just how dramatically. Though rightfully suspicious of outsiders, who have threatened both their language and their unique culture, most of the residents come to appreciate the young and idealistic schoolteacher, and she’s soon teaching just about everyone, despite opposition from both the school board and a politician with ulterior motives. Yet it’s the lessons Ellie herself will learn–from new friends, a captivating Cajun fisherman, and even a legendary white alligator haunting the bayou–that will make all the difference. Take a step away from the familiar and enter the shadowy waters of bayou country for a story of risk, resilience, and romance.

My Thoughts on Under the Bayou Moon
The first word that comes to mind when describing Under The Bayou Moon by Valerie Fraser Luesse – is lyrical. The sense that all the words chosen in this story convey a wonderful rich story filled with tiny descriptive details that leave a lasting impression on the reader. This is my second time reading a book by Valerie Fraser Luesse and what I loved about the first book has been carried out here in this book Under The Bayou Moon. The synopsis even says that she is an expert in the Southern Novel, and I find that statement to be fully accurate!
The characters were deep, earthy, and Valerie Fraser Luesse did an excellent job with their layering. I felt like every page I read I was getting a clear trail of information that gave me a better understanding of each character. And Ellie, Raphe, and the other characters flowed so well together; it felt seamless. Also, I think Ellie is one of the best characters I have had the pleasure of getting to know.
Through the difficulties, the learning curves the characters are thrown, and especially the warmth this cast of characters displayed, this will be a book I reread, a rare occurrence.
Overall, this book left me reeling from its intense warmth, faith, and real Cajun Bayou flare. I LOVED it. I mean Valerie Fraser Luesse’s descriptions of the Bayou just brought back so many different memories because of their accuracy – I mean there is nothing quite like a night on the Louisiana Bayou. The sounds, the lightni’ bugs, and the calm… ahh you need to experience it.
I highly recommend this richly detailed story that will leave you smiling and thinking. 5 Stars for Under The Bayou Moon.
*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
