Meet the Author:

Hope A. Walter, Ed. D grew up in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Upper Perkiomen High School, Hope received her B.S. in Elementary Education at Kutztown University in 1996, her M.S. in Educational Psychology in 2002 from the University of Las Vegas in Nevada, and her Ed.D in Educational Leadership in 2018. Currently, Hope resides in McMinnville, Oregon with her husband of 25 years, her 3 boys, and her 2 dogs and 2 cats. She works as an adjunct professor at Linfield University and Oregon State University teaching mathematics education and educational psychology to future teachers.

Punk’s Plight was conceptualized after teaching future teachers about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Hope saw the connection between ACES and the journey of her own bulldog, Pumpkin, who was neglected, rescued, and spent the rest of her life learning how to trust and love again. Sadly, Pumpkin passed away peacefully in November 2020 after a long life with the Walter family. Hope wants Punk’s story to help children suffering from neglect by showing children they can recover, heal, and prosper despite experiencing neglect.

My Thoughts

This book drew me in right from the cover ?. I love stories that feature animals, and this story of Punk the Pug was a bittersweet one. I loved the illustrations by Susi B. Davis, they drew me into Punk’s life, the care and rescue of Xavier, and to Punks eventual new family. They were very well done, and I enjoyed looking at them as they really helped me visualize the story.

The storyline itself was something a young child would probably not notice the meaning of, they would just think it is about a dog being rescued and getting a new home. But to the kids a bit older I think this would spark questions and lead to great discussions about what neglect is, how to recognize it, and what they can do if they see something that can be considered neglect. The author Hope A. Walter did a marvelous job displaying a double meaning for the entire story and at the back of the book leaves a series of questions and answers to help explain different ways kids can approach the topic with the adults in their lives. Hope A. Walter also leaves some resources for adults as well which I thought helpful.

The only thing I would have liked more would have been a bit more of a story to Punk’s story rather than it seeming almost clinical.

Overall, a wonderfully told story. 5 Stars.
