Title: The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper
Author: S.M. Morgan
Genre: Middle Grade WWII Time Travel Fiction

Synopsis:

“Help!! My head is being lowered into the swirling vortex of a toilet!”

My name is Teddy, and I’m in the 6th grade. It’s my first day at a different school, and so far, the only person I know is Zane, the school bully. I was just your everyday kid trying to stay off everyone’s radar, but when I met my new best friend, Bud Wiper, everything changed.

Bud is a 6th grade millionaire from 60 years ago.

Yep, that’s right, Bud Wiper is a treasure hunter from the 1940’s who left behind his journal full of life and adventure, and even though we’ve never met, I think he might be the only thing that gets me through the 6th grade alive.

The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper is a fantastic story of bravery and friendship, perfect for kids, middle school students, and adults.

Excerpt:

Let me explain. The reason I was being shoved into the trash can in the boy’s bathroom at my new school was all my fault. Or at least, that’s what Zane kept telling me after he and his friends cornered me. He said there wasn’t enough time for a swirly, so the trash can would have to do.

People often ask why I set my story in the period I did.

The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper is a middle-grade fiction book simultaneously set in two time periods. One is present day, and the other is set just a few years after World War II.

The setting of The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper was chosen for a few reasons. For one, World War II is an important event in history, and setting the book during this period allows it to explore the themes of the war in a meaningful way. It also allows for the exploration of the effects of the war on the people and culture who lived through it.

The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper also offers an interesting contrast between the past and the present. By setting the book in post-World War II, the reader can see how the world has changed.

At the same time, setting the book in post-World War II allowed me to write a modern character with pain and tragedy but still give him an anchor for hope and to realize that no matter how tough life is, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

I loved writing this book because I was able to talk about modern loss, pain, and hurt in a creative way where a present-day 6th grader was guided through the complexities of all of his problems by reading the diary of a larger-than-life character of his exact age from over 60 years before.

Finally, the setting of The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper allows for a bit of Indiana Jones-style adventure. Bud Wiper is a treasure hunter from the 1940s who left behind his journal full of life and adventure. The book is set in a time when the world was still rebuilding from the war, and the reader can get a sense of the hope and optimism that people had for the future.

Overall, the setting of The Lost Journals of Bud Wiper was chosen because it allows for the exploration of important themes, provides an exciting contrast between the past and the present, and offers a bit of adventure.
