What made you love books?
I’m so excited to be here on Adventures of a Traveler’s Wife talking about one of my very favorite subjects—books! I’ve been a bookworm as long as I can remember. In fact, my little sister used to resort to hiding my Nancy Drews so I’d play with her!
We grew up in the country, my sweet, pesky sis and I.
We had no nearby neighbors, so the characters in my beloved books became some of my dearest friends. And, oh, when an author could bring her story people to life, when he/she could make them real to me, what a gift that was! I spent lots of happy hours sprawled on our big front porch with a glass of sweet tea, enjoying the company of Laura Ingalls, Anne Shirley, Jo March and so many others. Today when reader tells me, “I feel like I know the people in your book—they’re so real!’ it’s the best compliment in the world!
Maybe I loved books partly because they were such a precious commodity. There was no Internet, no Amazon, no Kindle. We didn’t live near a bookstore, so I only received new books on special occasions like birthdays or Christmas. Fortunately our small town had a wonderful little Carnegie Library, and that tiny red brick building fed my reading addiction for many years. When a good book came my way, I read it over and over again, until I just about knew it by heart. Those stories became part of me.
What richness books bring to life!
Thanks to those gifted authors, a shy little girl from rural Georgia could travel to countless different times and places—all with a glass of tea in one hand! I met princes and prairie girls, heroines and hobbits, and I loved them all. I’ll always be grateful to those writers for the fabulous adventures they gave me.
As an author, I can tell you that books do that not only when you read them, but when you’re writing them, too! For example, while writing Shelter in the Storm, I dipped a toe into the Amish lifestyle, learning about their faith, their family life, their values. I explored, I learned and I grew—and once again, I walked alongside characters who felt like friends. I found my world enlarged and enriched.
Books have blessed me so much—both reading them and writing them. I love them dearly! Just ask my husband—he keeps having to build more bookshelves!
How have books blessed you? I’d love to hear!!
