AUTHOR Q & A WITH HOPE BOLINGER!
Which of your Published or Unpublished books is your favorite, and why?
I would have to say that my favorite has been writing Dear Henchman with Alyssa. We just love to make one another laugh, and I can’t believe we wrote that book in eight days.
How do you pick your character’s personalities or looks?
So I’m personally a fan of foils. I like to have characters who are the least adaptable to the conflict and then throw them right in. So for instance, in Picture Imperfect, I have a procrastinating artist who has a hard-set deadline.
What is your favorite genre to read? What is your favorite genre to write? And why are they your favorites?
This is such a hard question because I honestly don’t have a favorite in terms of reading. As long as it’s a well-told story that’s wholesome and clean, I’ll probably love it. This is also going to sound wishy washy, but I’ve loved each genre I’ve written for different reasons.
What inspires you the most?
Honestly, just how many doors God has opened. Any time I want to quit, he opens a door to a new opportunity as confirmation that I’m supposed to be in publishing.
Once an idea takes root, how long does it take you to write it down? Do you use outlines?
Totally depends on the idea. But I want to say it takes years to percolate in my mind, most often. I personally use outlines. Alyssa—apart from our sweet romances—doesn’t.
Do you have a favorite author? Or someone whom you would say has influenced your writing style?
It’s always so hard to choose, but I love the truth of Francine Rivers’s voice. She always writes clean fiction that doesn’t hold back. I always feel her prose are so relatable.
What are your hobbies other than writing?
I love to do modeling, hiking, tennis, handbells, theater, small group, and choir. I still have enough time to cuddle with my fat cat at home.
Do you have a genre that you would never write?
Horror. Definitely horror. I’ve written psychological thriller, but that’s about as close as I’ll get.
What is one thing you would say has had the greatest impact on your writing?
I would say life itself. People, places, events, they all have an impact. The good and bad have all shaped my writing, and I’m so grateful for all of it.
Lastly, what was your favorite book growing up?
It’s definitely changed depending on my age, but I will say one of my favorites when I got started writing as The Book Thief. I just loved the cleverness of the voice and that it showed a part of WWII we don’t often get to see.
