When Emily finds a timeworn photograph buried in a drawer, she realizes her grandmother has concealed a secret even bigger than her own. Will convincing Gram to reveal their family history help Emily make the most important decision of her life or will it prove her parents right—that family scandal is better off buried and forgotten? Massachusetts, 1916 Atta Schaeffer plans to marry the man of her dreams and whisk her little sister away from their abusive father. But when she is diagnosed with a dreaded malady, Atta is forced into a life of exile, leaving her sister in harm’s way. On Penikese Island, Atta’s best hope lies with Harry Mayhew, a doctor who seeks a cure for his patients at any cost. But when experiments fail, Atta runs from Harry—and from God. Can she return to her sister before it’s too late? Or will her illness consume both her body and soul? GUEST POST FROM HEIDI CHIAVAROLI
The hardest part about publishing books and the best thing about publishing books.
When I first received a book contract from my dream publisher, I thought the hardest part of publishing was over. I’d done it. I’d climbed the publishing hill and succeeded! Little did I know that the most challenging part of publishing was just ahead. It involved an unassuming word I hadn’t thought much of until that moment—marketing.
As authors, we spend so much time in our stories, crafting believable characters and intricate plots…and then when we prepare to release them, we often realize that the work is actually only halfway done! Because if we can’t reach readers, what does all that time in our stories even matter?
I must admit that after ten novels, I’m beginning to get the hang of essential marketing. Some of it (the part where I get to connect with readers!) I even enjoy! But there’s always more that can be done. The hard part for me is deciding when it’s time to stop marketing (or at least slow down after a new release), and start the next book. In the end, I usually urge myself to begin the next book, as new books tend to create awareness for older ones.
Thankfully, there are many other aspects of publishing that I do enjoy. By far, the best thing about publishing books is hearing how my stories have impacted readers. I love receiving notes, messages, and reviews from readers detailing how one of my novels touched their hearts, caused them to think differently, or encouraged them in their own journey. When that happens, all the research and planning and writing and edits—and even the marketing—are worth it!
