“I’m turning your life inside out, Logan. I’m sorry.”
“This is what friends are for. To help each other out when things get hard.” He hesitated.
“I’m still your friend, Charlotte. Lots of things have changed over the years, but that never has,
at least not for me. You know that, right?”
It took her a minute for her to answer. “Always,” she whispered around the lump in her
throat.

“Always,” he agreed softly, his eyes crinkling around the edges at their special word.
“That means you can tell me anything. Ruby told me not to pry, and I won’t. But if there’s
anything you need to talk about, I’m here.”
She patted his forearm—it felt like patting a rock. Then she looked away, over the
darkening farm, hoping he couldn’t read her expression.
Because he was wrong. There were some things she couldn’t tell him.
