Excerpt
Jackson drove down the nearly deserted road that led to the ranch. He was technically outside of town limits and already driving along his family’s land. He was still a couple of miles from the main entrance but it was deeply satisfying to drive past beautiful, green acreage and know that it was all Ashford land.
Granted, he couldn’t see that it was green. Not at nearly eleven pm. Between the lack of streetlights on the country road and the fact that the moon was waning on this cloudy night, Jackson could basically only see what his headlights illuminated.
He’d enjoyed his evening out with friends but had called it quits early. His friends were still at the bar, but Jackson hadn’t found much to interest him that night. Typically, even though Jackson didn’t drink, he’d have fun playing pool, dancing with a pretty woman, or even just catching up with old friends.
But tonight it just hadn’t been the same. Jackson couldn’t put his finger on it.
His evening had started delightfully at Delia’s cute school play. Seeing the pride in her eyes as she performed her little heart out and then the way she’d run to his brother? It had made Jackson’s cold heart warm a bit.
