What You Will Need To Make A Book Wreath
Gathering your supplies thoughtfully before starting will make putting together your book wreath not only easier but a lot more enjoyable. Being prepared means fewer stops to find missing items and a clearer mind to focus on creativity. Plus, having everything in one place helps avoid frustration and unwanted surprises during your project.

- Old Books (or ARCs!): Ripped pages, old book pages, scrapbook paper… even newspaper would work.
- Wreath Frame: A circular frame made of wire, foam, cardboard, or wood, roughly 10 to 14 inches in diameter, will serve as the wreath’s foundation. Wire offers flexibility, foam makes attachment easier, and sturdy cardboard is cost-effective and lightweight, while wood offers stability and rigidity that will hold up. Choose one according to your preferred method of attaching the books and the finished wreath’s weight.
**Pro Tip: Visit your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Thrift store to see what they have in stock. Some craft stores often have them on sale, so be on the lookout for that as well.
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: A hot glue gun with low-temperature glue sticks is essential for securely fixing the books to the base and ensuring a durable wreath. Low-temp glue is safer for delicate paper to prevent burns and damage, while still holding firmly. Have extra glue sticks on hand to avoid interruptions during assembly.
- Scissors or specialty scissors with fancy cutting edges: Sharp scissors or scissors with fancy cutting edges will be needed to carefully trim excess pages, adjust the frame, or fix rough edges.
- Optional: Decorative Ribbon, Stickers, or ink pads: Ribbon will add a finishing touch for hanging the wreath, tying a bow, or weaving through pages for extra charm. Choose colors and textures that complement your books and décor style. Tailor the length to fit your desired display location. Stickers add a fun layer if you want to add quotes or characters from the book. Ink Pads add texture to the edges and help define them if you put your wreath on a lighter color wall when finished.
Having all these items at your fingertips will keep your creative momentum flowing without stopping for each little thing. You’ll be able to enjoy the process fully, focusing on making your wreath uniquely yours. Maybe even while listening to an… audiobook!

Step 1: Plan Your Book Wreath Design
Jumping into crafting without a clear plan can turn your project into a disorganized mess, so taking a moment to plan your wreath design is wise. This step helps you decide the wreath size, book selection style, and overall look, which sets the tone for your crafting session. Planning also gives you a chance to envision where it will be displayed, making sure it fits perfectly in your intended space.
Decide on Wreath Diameter
Choosing the right size, generally between 10 and 14 inches in diameter, helps with visibility and ease of handling. A smaller wreath might suit cozy spaces or table centerpieces, whereas a larger wreath becomes a bold wall statement. Keep in mind where it will hang to select the size that fits best.
Choose Book Style and Color Theme
Consider whether your wreath will showcase vintage novels, colorful children’s books, or eclectic mixes that reflect your personality. A monochrome look can feel elegant, while multicolored pages lend cheerfulness.
🖤Optional Ideas
Incorporate Pressed Flowers in to your book wreath
Slide small pressed flowers or leaves between folded pages for a botanical vibe. This adds texture and natural beauty without overpowering the book pages. It’s a delicate decoration that also preserves memories of a season, which could be changed seasonally if desired.
Use Stenciled Letters
Add painted or stenciled letters onto some cover pages spelling a meaningful phrase, date, or name. This customization allows you to tailor your wreath to special events or specific genres. Use subtle colors for a classy look.
Step 2: Create the Base Frame for Your Book Wreath
The wreath frame is the backbone of your project, giving structure and stability throughout. Choosing the right frame material and securing it well will keep your wreath intact for years to come. Building a firm base balances your book weight and makes the attachment process smoother.

Select the Frame Material
Decide between wire, foam, sturdy cardboard, or wood frames based on your preference and supply availability. Wire frames adapt easily to adjustments, foam offers easy gluing, and cardboard is inexpensive but may require reinforcement, while wood offers strength and longevity. Choose a frame diameter that matches your planned wreath size.
Reinforce the Frame if Needed.
If using cardboard or softer wire, strengthen the frame by doubling layers or twisting multiple wires together for durability. Reinforcement ensures your wreath form holds bookfolds without sagging or warping. This step prevents frustration later during wear.
Cover the Frame (Optional)
Wrap the frame in ribbon, fabric strips, or paper to prevent glue from sticking directly and to lend a cleaner finished look behind the books. This is optional but adds polish and may protect the frame from damage. Choose covering materials that complement your book colors.
A sturdy and properly prepared frame foundation is key to a book wreath that stands the test of time. Investing a bit of effort here allows for a confident build.
Tips:
Wrap the Book Wreath frame with Neutral-Colored Material
If you cover your frame, selecting neutral tones like beige, white, or gray will keep the focus on the books. This avoids clashing or distracting colors behind your intricate folds. Neutral bases provide timeless appeal.
🖤Optional Ideas
Add a Wire Loop for Hanging
Before attaching book pages, create or attach a wire loop at the top of your frame for easier hanging later. This built-in hook saves hassle and ensures sturdiness. Make sure it aligns with your wreath’s weight center.
Carve Foam Frames for Custom Shapes
If you want something other than a circle, cut or carve foam wreath forms into ovals, hearts, or squares using craft knives. Unique shapes personalize your decor and showcase creativity. Just consider book placement variations.
Paint the Frame
Spray paint or hand-paint your wreath base in coordinating or contrasting colors before assembling. This adds an artistic layer and helps cover any gaps later visible between books. Choose matte or gloss finishes based on style.
Step 3: Attach the Book Wreath Pages to the Frame
This step is where your vision begins to take tangible shape, as your book pages get rolled into a cone shape and fixed onto the frame. Careful attachment ensures the wreath looks lush and balanced, so patience is especially valuable here. Taking your time to arrange book pages thoughtfully transforms your effort into a work of art.

Roll paper cones neatly
Roll each page inward to create a cone shape; your paper rolls should be consistent for an even wreath texture. Use the little glue to hold the paper rolls together, then, beginning with the first layer, overlay the second layer as you work around the front of the wreath. Place the rolls with a little more hot glue. It takes a little bit of time to get the edges of the pages to lay how you want, but the overall effect is stunning.
Glue the Cones
Glue Cones in a circular rotation, starting from the outside layer and working in. Using a little dab of hot glue to hold it in place, press it in place for a few seconds before moving on to the next cone. Make sure all points are pointing to the center. At the same time, the next layer will cover the points until you get to the center of the wreath. At which time you can make small cones for the center or use a picture or ribbon as the center piece.

Arrange the Book Wreath pages closely for Fullness
Place book pages side by side with minimal gaps to create a thick, full wreath appearance; overlap slightly if necessary. A dense arrangement produces a captivating texture that draws the eye seamlessly around. Adjust spacing frequently to maintain balanced volume all around.
Watching your wreath take shape as pages cluster in tight, decorative folds is a satisfying part of the crafting journey. Good placement here pays off in overall wreath beauty and stability.
Tips:
Work in Small Sections
Glue and press a few books at a time instead of all at once to maintain glue fluidity and precise placement. This method improves accuracy and reduces mess. Pace yourself.
🖤Optional Ideas
Incorporate Curled Pages
Gently roll or curl a few book pages outward to add dynamic texture variation within your wreath. Curled shapes give movement and natural flair. Combine curls and folds for an artful contrast.
Mix in Magazine or Sheet Music Pages
Add a few pages from magazines or old sheet music for added pattern and variety. These glossy or patterned papers break monotony and introduce personal touches. Just bond carefully to avoid slipping.
Step 4: Add the Final Decorative Touches to your Book Wreath
This phase lets your creativity really shine, and is a great way to make your own book page wreath unique to a specific book (or genre). The right finishing touches bring character to your wreath and integrate it into your craft project naturally. It also makes your wreath distinctly yours.
Tie a Ribbon Bow at the Top or Bottom
Select a ribbon that complements your books’ colors and tie an elegant bow secured with glue or wire. Positioning the bow at the top or bottom creates a focal point and adds softness. Satin, burlap, or velvet ribbons all lend different moods.
Weave Twine Through the Pages
Thread natural twine or thin decorative string decoratively through pages to create texture and rustic charm. Twine adds visual interest and ties in natural elements when flowers or greenery are not used. Be mindful not to pull too tightly and damage pages.
Attach Small Ornaments or Charms
Add lightweight charms, tiny wooden letters, or themed baubles glued or wired securely for seasonal wreath variations. This personalization displays your style or celebrates holidays subtly. Arrange evenly to maintain wreath balance.
Your wreath is now not only ready to display, but also a reflection of your taste and care. These final steps help turn a simple craft into a cherished decorative gem.
Tips:
Match the Decoration Scale to the Book Wreath Size
Keep decorative accents proportional to the wreath’s diameter to avoid overwhelming or underwhelming the overall look. Small wreaths suit delicate adornments; large wreaths can carry bolder accessories.
Secure Decorations Firmly
Glue or securely wire added decorations with extra care to prevent shifting or falling off with movement. Double-check attachment points before finalizing. This ensures longevity and neatness.
🖤Optional Ideas
Add Faux Greenery
Incorporate sprigs of eucalyptus, rosemary, or faux greenery tucked between folded pages for a fresh, natural vibe. This brings seasonal interest and pleasant aromas if using scented greenery. Arrange around the outer layer evenly for fullness.
Incorporate Mini LED String Lights
Lightly wrap tiny battery-powered LED string lights around your book wreath for a magical glow. Ideal for cozy evenings or holiday decorations, lights create ambiance and sparkle. Conceal the battery pack on the back of your wreath base. This element adds a whimsical element to your book wreath and doubles as a nightlight, too! Plus, if you are showcasing a fantasy or romance, it adds a really sweet nod to the genre.
Apply Glitter or Metallic Accents
Sprinkle subtle glitter or paint metallic edges on some folded pages for a gentle shimmer effect. This adds elegance and festivity without overpowering vintage book charm. Use adhesives sparingly to avoid a mess.
Step 5: Choose a Display Location and Hang Your Book Wreath
Once your book wreath is complete, picking the perfect spot to showcase it breathes life into your project. This is part of the fun. Do you rearrange your bookshelf to display it? Find a place to hang it on your wall? Or use it as a centerpiece for your table?

Identify a Suitable Wall or Door
Look for places where your wreath’s size and style complement the surrounding décor and catch the eye naturally. Avoid walls exposed to direct sunlight or moisture, which could fade or warp pages. Ensure space around it for the wreath to “breathe.”
Use Appropriate Hanging Hardware
Choose sturdy hooks, nails, or my personal favorite, Command strips, that support the wreath’s weight and material without damaging walls. Wire loops behind the wreath or ribbon loops can help secure it evenly. Consider seasonal damage if hanging outdoors.
Mount at Eye Level or Slightly Higher
Positioning your wreath at about eye level or a bit above ensures it commands attention without straining necks. This classic placement is visually pleasing and practical for spaces like living rooms or entryways. Adjust height based on furniture or surrounding features.
Tips:
Test Hanging Stability Before Final Placement
Gently tug the wreath once hung to confirm it won’t slip or fall. This simple check saves accidents and damage. Adjust hardware if needed.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Sunlight can yellow or fade book pages over time. Choose shaded indoor locations or north-facing walls for longevity. This protects your hard work.
Keep Away from Humidity Sources
Bathrooms or near kitchens may have moisture that weakens glue and warps paper. Dry rooms preserve the wreath’s quality and shape longer. Consider dehumidifiers if necessary.
🖤Optional Ideas
Use a Wreath Hanger with a Decorative Finish
Select a hanger shaped or colored to complement your wreath, adding an extra layer of design even at the mounting point. Finishes like brushed gold or rustic wood amplify style. This accessory enhances the overall display.
Switch Decorations Seasonally
Rotate bows, lights, or charms on your book wreath to reflect seasons or holidays without crafting a new piece. This keeps your wreath fresh and relevant year-round. Store decorations carefully off-season.
Pair with Complementary Wall Art
Create a vignette by hanging your wreath near framed prints, mirrors, or shelving that echoes your wreath’s theme or colors. This coordinated display feels intentional and curated. Play with size and shape variety for balance.
