Today I get the pleasure of interviewing YA Author KJ Rowe!
How do you pick your character’s personalities, or looks?
Some characters are just so vivid in my head I write down how I see them, other times I start writing how I want the characters personality to be, and as they start to take form in my mind, I go back and add in details about their appearance.
Once an idea takes root, how long does it take you to write it down?
Generally, I jump on ideas straight away. I just grab my phone and send myself a text message with the idea, or a drafted dialogue etc. I have found if I don’t do it right away, the ideas get fuzzy by the time I get back to my laptop.
What are your hobbies other than writing?
I like to practise some instruments that I have. Predominately I play flute, but I want to spend more time trying to learn Piano and Ukulele – I really enjoy the little Ukulele and picking it up not too bad, but Piano I’m finding a bit more of a challenge! But practise makes perfect, as they say 😀
Do you have a genre that you would never write? (In the Christian genre sphere i.e. speculative, historical, contemporary, etc.)
That is an interesting question. I don’t think so. Depends where I feel the Lord impressing me though. Currently, I feel current day with current issues is where the Lord wants me to direct the stories.
Lastly, what was your favorite book growing up?
It is hard to pin point a favourite, but when thinking about all the books I read growing up, I keep circling back to three my dad gave me, which were books he read when he was in school:
- ‘Lad. A Dog’ by Albert Payson Terhune
- ‘Silver Chief’ by Jack O’Brien
- ‘The Call of the Wild’ by Jack London
I tend to feel that ‘Lad. A Dog’ may have been slightly favoured out of the three, as as soon as I was old enough, I got myself a Rough Collie.
About the Book
Book: Unassailable
Author: K.J. Rowe
Genre: Teen/Young Adult
To be picture perfect on the outside can cause people to think you have it all together on the inside. Which is exactly the case for Hope Meyer.
Stuck in a dead-end job with no vision for her future, parents arguing at home and newly-single under terms she bitterly objects to, Hope puts on a brave front in the face of friends. Only, she’s not as subtle as she thinks. Called out on her pretense by a close friend and, drawn into a mission project that causes her to question everything she’s been led to believe, Hope finds herself floundering.
Until recently, the perfect hair, manicured nails, a wardrobe straight out of a fashion magazine and a handsome suitor by her side had defined her. Now seeing those things as insignificant, and understanding why her boyfriend left, Hope turns to her youth minister for help; with one burning question in mind:
Who was she?
Set on a path of self-discovery, Hope finds her day to day both unraveling and piecing together like a jigsaw as her perception begins to alter.
Will she embrace how God defines her and ultimately learn what true happiness is?
About the Author
Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.
In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…
In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…
However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.
It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.
It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.
