Fifteen years ago, Shelby Pearce confessed to murdering her brother-in-law and was sent to prison. Now she’s out on parole and looking for a fresh start in the small town of Valleysburg, Texas. But starting over won’t be easy for an ex-con.
FBI Special Agent Denton McClure was a rookie fresh out of Quantico when he was first assigned the Pearce case. He’s always believed Shelby embezzled five hundred thousand dollars from her brother-in-law’s account. So he’s going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.
But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It’s up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby—and the truth—forever.

Shelby’s and Denton’s Wish Lists
From Trace of Doubt
By DiAnn Mills
Girls dream about the perfect husband from the time they are old enough to understand marriage is possible. Many use diaries to create a list of the perfect traits for the perfect guy. Then comparison time comes, and if the guy doesn’t measure up to the checklist, well, on to the next one. This guy is simply a good friend. What did I see in him? Or wow, this one is special.
Guys seldom keep a list of what they’re looking for in a future wife. Those traits are in their heads. But when they meet a girl, they recall their mental checklist to see if this one is a possibility. This girl is a good friend. What did I see in her beyond a pretty face? Or wow, this one could fill my dreams.
But what happens when two people look so opposite there’s a strong chance one may eliminate the other? That’s what happened to Shelby and Denton. I seized the opportunity to ask about what their love-wish lists contained.
Shelby:
- Love and accept me for who I am
- No desire to change or mold me into someone I’m not
- Outward appearance isn’t nearly as important as his heart
- Steady job.
- Trustworthy
- Respects me
- Always learning about something new kind of guy
- Enjoys the outdoors
- Encourages me to try new things.
- Understands God is a priority in every relationship
Denton:
- Love me despite my faults
- A pretty face is great, but her personality is more important
- A good cook or willing to learn
- Appreciates nature and animals
- Understands faith is essential to a successful marriage
Shelby’s list is longer than Denton’s. But the length doesn’t matter when it’s clear the two dislike and are suspicious of each other. Love has a way of drawing together what may seem incompatible, as the two discovered in the story.
