My Thoughts on Portal Slayer: Beneath the Shadows
I want to start off this review by talking about the cover.
I don’t often make mention of the book cover in my book reviews, but I think this one needs some praise. I was immediately captivated by the bold color choices and standout font and even though everyone tries not to judge a book by its cover… realistically it’s near to impossible. But I love the fact that this cover matches the story inside.
This was my first time reading a book by S.L. Dooley and I am always a bit leary when I pick up any new book labeled fantasy. But I started reading Portal Slayer: Beneath the Shadows and I could not put it down.
S.L. Dooley did a fantastic job immediately diving you into the story and building it up around you; and it was easy to follow along with the characters’ mannerisms not being too “fantasized”.
The Characters were very detailed and I thought S.L Dooley did a great job weaving many personalities and values into this story. And I was very interested in the family dynamics she used. I don’t often see them played out as well as this was done.
Plus, there is a map and I LOVE when books have them. It really helps me visualize how the author sees the world of which they write. Oh and did I mention DRAGONS?
Overall, I enjoyed S.L.Dooley’s book and I am looking forward to reading book two Portal Slayer: Hidden Journey over the upcoming weekend.
4 Stars.
