AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Which of your Published or Unpublished books is your favorite, and why?
I honestly can’t pick a favorite. I’d have to say any book that isn’t complete. Books are like movies in my head. When I finish the project, it’s always a done deal. Not that they are always great books, just satisfiying to me to have it out of my head and on paper.
How do you pick your character’s personalities or looks?
I find interesting situations and come up with a challenge. Then I find a personality that would make that situation more challenging and finally, I look on Pinterest for photos of people I that I like. I even have pictures of bad guys.
What is your favorite genre to read?
My favorite genre to read is historical mysteries.
What is your favorite genre to write?
I actually love suspense and history the same. Eventually I plan to write a dual time novel where I can enjoy history and a modern suspense at the same time!
And why are they your favorites?
I’m an action and adventure person but I love putting history into the context of modern times. How did we get here? What shaped this place? What kind of people lived here? It makes me understand life better.
What inspires you the most?
Travel. I always get new ideas for stories when I travel and I love being outdoors.
Once an idea takes root, how long does it take you to write it down? Do you use outlines?
Once and idea inspires me it can take years to germinate. I have one book that started with a dream 20 years ago. I have so many ideas that have never taken shape simply because there’s not enough time in a day. Right now, I’d say my writing is about 2 yrs behind my ideas. But that’s a good thing because all kinds of neat offshoots percolate in those years. And yes, I always use an outline. I have multiple story lines going on in a romantic suspsense and I try to track them. But seriously, my characters always have other ideas and go where they want.
Do you have a favorite author?
Right now my favorite writer is C.S. Harris. She’s writing historical mysteries.
Or someone whom you would say has influenced your writing style?
I’d have to say that my critique partners and editors have had the most impact on my writing style. They are the ones who have shaped me into the kind of writer I wanted to be.
What are your hobbies other than writing?
Travel and pickleball. I used to play tennis but discovered pickleball is much easier on my body.
Do you have a genre that you would never write?
Horror or erotica.
What is one thing you would say has had the greatest impact on your writing?
Determination. I’ve wanted to write since I was 11 years old but it kept getting put on the back burner while I raised four children and worked to help support them. I was constantly writing and never gave up no matter how hard it was or how many rejections I received. The stories wouldn’t stop coming so I didn’t stop trying.
Lastly, what was your favorite book growing up?
My favorite book growing up was a book called Mara. It was set in ancient Egypt. I know…I know. Weird. But I loved how a young girl in a very different time and place had the same emotional challenges I was experiencing in my own pre-teen life. Before that book it was Nancy Drew all the way!
