How I Craft My Stories
How I craft my stories … this is a fun question to answer because I have both a creative and engineering brain. In the world of writing, those opposites are often described as a plotter or a pantser (someone who writes by the seat of their pants). I’ve come to realize I’m both and neither and here’s why …
On the one hand, I’m an intuitive writer. I don’t plot out my stories. I prefer to get to know the characters, set them in a difficult situation, and see what they do. In essence, I’m just along for the ride. I love that process of discovery, of my character’s personalities unfolding as they face various trials, of not knowing what the bad guy will do, or sometimes who the bad guy is!
However, my mathematical mind likes structure and organization. One would think that would lead to being a plotter, but I haven’t found that to be the case. If I know what happens at the end of the story too early in the writing of it, the story loses what I love most: that element of discovery. So, instead, I create what amounts to a scaffolding on which to hang my story.
What does this look like?
I begin with a spreadsheet (I mentioned I have an engineer’s brain and spreadsheets are like catnip). First, I set my word count goal, how long I’d like my chapters, then let the algorithm I’ve created map out where I need the major turning points in my story. Like the first Act turn, the middle, and the climax. Those happen in about the same spots in most stories, no matter a story’s length.
Once the scaffold structure is set, I know what word count I need to aim at in order to hit each point. It’s like mini-goals. Or like traveling through a forest in a straight line by picking a tree that is straight ahead, walking to it, then picking another tree directly ahead to stay on course.
Similarly, having the scaffold structure keeps my characters from straying even as I follow their story through the process of discovery. The story can morph naturally this way because I still don’t know what happens at each of those plot turning points until I get there, just that those major turning points will happen when they should. And, I hope readers will be as surprised as I am by what happens next.
