The Art of Reinvention
Fifty years ago I told my parents I wanted to be an attorney. They sat me down and explained my choices were teacher, nurse, or bookkeeper (like my mom). They meant well, I know. It’s just that they didn’t know any female lawyers and persuaded me I was better suited to one of the other professions.
I finished college in three years and began substitute teaching for a nano-second. Jobs were hard to come by, and since all I could get was subbing, my husband asked me to stay home and help him with the back office of our brand-new business. I agreed and took on learning everything you needed to know about the chauffeured car business. I called other car companies and asked questions, creating dispatching sheets and cold-calling clients from the yellow pages. Soon, one car became six, six cars became a fleet. We moved the business from the house and found ourselves with dozens of employees in multiple cities.
We grew to be the largest luxury ground transportation service in Hollywood. My entire family worked for the company, and when my mom, who was the Comptroller passed away, I became depressed. I missed her.
My adult sons asked me to write a book. We set up a contest, and I wrote the first of my seventy-one books. I found a new calling. I loved writing and the community associated with it.
I still had my day job, the writing, marketing, and all the outshoots filled my day. Soon, I had a podcast, blog, radio show, and groups of authors that I helped promote their books.
Not one to sit idle. a year ago, I became a practicing medium and see upwards of twenty people monthly. I have just been offered another podcast, which I am debating if I can fit into my schedule.
What’s the moral of this story? You can do anything you desire, and nothing, not gender or anything else should hold you back.
