The Day I Became a Reader

If you walked into my house, you would know a booklover lived here due to the books in every room. In fact, some of my bookshelves look like they are 30 seconds away from collapsing, they are so full. And that doesn’t include the books on devices.

It might shock some to know I have not always been in love with the written word. I remember going to library each week in school and being (dare I say it?) B-O-R-E-D. It’s so hard to write that and not wince, but it’s true.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved it when my mom or the teacher read to me. That was fine. But I had no interest in reading a book myself.

That all changed in second grade. My family had moved to a house on the same street as the public library. One summer day, my mother took my brothers and I for a walk to the library to get our own library cards. Then she told me to pick out a couple of books, and I had to read them.

I grabbed two with pretty covers. I never even read the back blurb. At home, I started flipping through the pages, and before I knew it, I was hooked. It was a story of a young girl whose mother was diagnosed with cancer. My grandmother had recently died from cancer. I sobbed my way through this book. I had seen myself in the pages.

By the time it ended, I couldn’t wait to go back to the library and find more treasures. By the time I was in 8th grade, I was gathering as many books as I could read, in every genre possible. I read science fiction and fantasy, historical fiction, romance and all it’s subgenres, young adult… I read it all. Truth be told, I read some books that I probably shouldn’t have at my age.

There are some series that I read as a teenager which I bought and still own today. Anne of Green Gables. The Emily of New Moon trilogy. The Riftwar Cycle by Raymond E. Feist.

My Aunt Norma further encouraged me. When she realized I loved swoonworthy romances with Happy Ever Afters, she started collecting her category books as she read and placing them in boxes. Once she’d filled two boxes, she’d send them my way, from Minnesota to Illinois. I loved coming home from school and finding those boxes on my front porch! My 3rd book, Plain Target, was dedicated to her memory.

And this lifelong love of reading all began with a simple trip to get a library card.

That was forty plus years ago. I don’t recall the title, but I will never forget the story that was the catalyst for my love of reading.
