How you craft your stories? Walk us through your process; Story boards, Pinterest characters, detailed notes, outlines…etc.
I’m a huge believer in outlining. But before I know the plot, I have to know my characters. That’s where The Story Equation comes in.
Susan May Warren’s method for uncovering the characters’ dark moment story, their flaws, and all the parts of their history that need to be uncovered and overcome during the plot journey is a great resource.
Coupled with the book Story Genius by Lisa Cron, I can set my story off right.
I figure out what my character believes about themselves, the world around them, and what they’ve been through so by the time they walk onto page one they’re a whole and complex person.
Developing the plot, I have a lot that’s intrinsic now. After writing 60 books story structure is pretty ingrained in me, so I can feel out the flow based on cause and effect – if we need this, then we have to go there and get it, but when we do this happens. If I get stuck, I fall back on the questions in KM Weiland’s Structuring Your Novel Workbook.
I use white boards and poster paper to map out the 3 acts of my book. And I plug it all into Plottr writing software along with my character information.
- If I get stuck, I’ll get a small group of writers together and brainstorm. Collaboration always gets me better, or deeper, ideas than I can have on my own.
And then I’m off to write the first draft!
With each chapter, I don’t start typing until I know the scene well enough to visualize it. Good notes are key to not sitting and staring at the screen, or that dreaded blinking cursor. I write a lot on Discord, with timed writing sprints, where I’m on a couple of servers packed with writers engaged in moving their careers forward who enjoy helping each other with ideas, advise, encouragement and commiseration.
