Since as the saying goes “history repeats itself”, what are some steps we as a nation can take now to prevent history from repeating itself?

The saying is that “history repeats itself.” Actually, that’s not true. History does nothing.

Instead, it is people who choose to repeat history. It might also be interesting to note that “history” and “the past” are two different things. The past is what really happened. History is just what someone wrote down and doesn’t always take into account the discrepancies reported—even by eye-witnesses.

What are some of the best ways to find the truth in today’s society, since we really can’t trust the media or the political parties?

As a nation, to avoid some of the worst missteps of the past, our number one priority is to actually know what happened, why, and how. In his autobiography, Mein Kampf, published in 1925, Adolph Hitler wrote, “How fortunate for leaders that men do not think. Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”.

Mein Kampf sold sparingly at first but by 1930, it was a bestseller and widely read in Germany at the time. Three years later, despite Hitler literally telling the German people he would lie to them, they elected him anyway.

Which brings us to the second thing we must do: commit to the truth and elect leaders who actually know how to tell it.

Still, the danger America faces is not a single politician with ill intent. Or even a group of them. The greatest danger any nation faces is a citizenry capable of trusting a liar to lead them. Any nation can survive having chosen a fool to lead them, but as the past tells us, a “nation of fools” is surely doomed.

Now is the time to decide who we are!
